Biography and Curriculum Vitae

Stephanie Florence (they/them) is a Neurodiverse Non-binary interdisciplinary artist seeking to intertwine individualistic society through socially transformative art and question the colonial-capitalist-ableist status quo. They aim to be a leader in the arts through collaborative projects and empathetic action that engages community and builds knowledge. Florence completed an MFA at the University of Waterloo in 2023, where they received SSHRC funding, Alberta Arts Graduate Scholarship, and the Keith and Win Shantz International Research Scholarship for their research into interspecies citizenship. Their artwork has travelled to 15 cities across Canada, Indonesia, and Norway, and they led two dynamic years of curation for the SkirtsAfire Theatre Festival. Florence produces artwork with humans, more-than-humans, salvaged materials, and the Land, resulting in narrative-based, site-specific, and public relational art interventions.

In 2021, Florence completed the Yorath House Studio residency, and found a permanent home for The Human Wheel at the Lowlands Project Space. In 2022, as a curator and project manager they collaborated with Norwegian collectives—LOCUS and LATERNA—to produce public artwork and organize a performance arts festival in Oslo, Norway. In 2024 they co-founded a national interdisciplinary arts collective, CARBON, and the collective built Solo-pollinator Homes for local community gardens with the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery and rare Charitable Research Reserve. They completed a 5-month Gardener-AIR at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, debuted Monster Pageant with Inter Arts Matrix at Schneider Haus National Historic Site, and with CAFKA in the Region of Waterloo. They have upcoming solo exhibitions with Homer Watson House and Gallery (Kitchener-2027), and PRAKSIS (Oslo-2027). They have published poetry with the Thunderbirds Collective and have upcoming publications with Danish Architectural Press and PRAKSIS. Florence is contributing to the Rethinking Tourism Network over the next several years with PRAKSIS, KORO, and Samong Haven, by participating in a residency and conference in Bali, Indonesia and a community art project and conference in Lofoten, Norway.

They use pronouns such as they, their, them, she, her, hers, he, him, and his, with a preference for they/them.
Picture
I combat the erasure of disabling and oppressive experiences through participatory art that empowers sensory-based counter-narratives and connections to the land. This tends to reveal segregating powers that devalue the collective spirit. Over my evolving artistic journey, I have learnt that I must prioritize meaningful collaboration and collectivity by being present, sensitive, and reciprocal. This means connecting deeply with and honouring the beings present in the work, while also respectfully embodying the contextual subject matter and histories. This can be extremely vulnerable and difficult to accomplish, often involving failure and unlearning.

Rethinking Tourism Network 2025-2026
PRAKSIS, KORO, and Samong Haven to participate in a two part residency producing literature, workshops, art, and educational material to rethink tourism in Bali, Indonesia and Lofoten, Norway. Together we are building a network of resident community members, artists, and scholars to address over-tourism and colonial systems globally.

The soul of Bali is the people, culture, and ritual. Bali is a paradise because of the reciprocity that has stayed intact despite colonialism and globally commoditized tourism of the island and people.

Solo-pollinator Hotels with CARBON 2025
When building Solo-pollinator Hotels, conservationists and partners from rare taught CARBON and I the necessity of implementing virus-safe ceramic bee-tubes.

If I only think of humans as my community, then I have failed to unlearn and reimagine a world with interspecies citizens.

Portals into Discordia 2021-2025
While producing the audio and video work for Portals into Discordia, I spent over a year learning the non-verbal body language of Moss to make them an active art collaborator.

I am an extension of my Moss kin and if I listen through an embodied practice, the land and water integrate me into their communion. The invention of the individual is the greatest form of contemporary propaganda.

Echoes of this Land: Call to Action 52 (Buried Breath) 2023 - 2024
When writing the poem Buried Breath for Call to Action 52, I learnt Anishinaabeg from an Elder through invitation and worked with an Elk skin passed down in my family.

My settler ancestors brought me to Turtle Island and now I have been given this great gift to unlearn my colonial roots. How deep are these roots and can I heal my intergenerational trauma? When were we not colonized?

COVID COLLECTION 2020-2021
In 2021, I collaborated with SkirtsAfire to produce a short film and publish an anthology of poetry, art, stories, interviews, and writing by 26 diverse community members in Edmonton, Alberta, entitled COVID COLLECTIONS.

During the making and publication of COVID COLLECTIONS I learnt the significance of meeting with all the artists, poets, interviewees, and writers involved to inform my editing through deep listening.

I, Stephanie Florence, acknowledge that I have conducted creative research and gained as a settler in the Indigenous land, amiskwacîwâskahikan, which is located on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional lands of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people. amiskwacîwâskahikan is home to a diverse range of Indigenous nations and peoples, including the nêhiyawak / Cree, Niitsitapi / Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Haudenosaunee / Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway / Saulteaux / Anishinaabeg, Tsuutʼina, and Inuit. I am committed to combatting colonization, racism, ableism, and cis-hetero-patriarchy by acknowledging my inherent privilege as a white Canadian settler and attempting to make inclusive safe spaces for all perspectives.

Subsequently, I do not believe the Canadian government or Crown has ever attempted to act with honour in any legal standing with Indigenous peoples as Modern Specific and Comprehensive Land Claims and Treaties are continuously broken. The “Doctrine of Discovery” and terra nullius are racist and antiquated forms of religious legal standing that do not give the colonial-Canadian-state a right to rule, discriminate, steal, and murder Indigenous peoples, their lands, and their sovereignty. In essence, Indigenous peoples are the rightful heirs of Turtle Island and should be consulted and considered in every decision that affects land and kin.

Currently, I am producing artwork on the O:se Kenhionhata:tie--Willow Creek watershed—or the so-called Haldimand Tract, which was "given" to Haudenosaunee peoples after the loss of their traditional home lands due to the American Revolution. Traditionally this land belonged to the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. As a second generation Canadian, I am grateful to the nations of Turtle Island and believe they are the rightful guardians and keepers of the land I have grown up in. I stand in solidarity with all Treaty peoples that further the systemic breakdown of racism and colonialism that is embedded deeply in the Canadian state.
